Help! I don’t like Yoga!
Nowadays it seems that everyone is practising yoga and thanks to well known people like Sting, Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ryan Giggs, yoga has become very fashionable, as the recent International Yoga Day showed. The benefits are well known – a safe method of exercise for all ages and abilities; improved mental focus; better flexibility and movement; fewer injuries and aches and pains; a stronger, healthier back; better breathing; improved posture; better sleep patterns; increased energy levels; feeling calm and in control… These benefits are gradual and the result of a regular practice.

Mindfulness and the Roadworks around Ipswich
I am continuing to look into Mindfulness and have been reading ‘Mindfulness for Beginners’ by Jon Kabat-Zinn, as well as listening to his CDs.
Mindfulness clearly has health benefits in dealing with stress, anxiety and illness, but how easy is it to maintain mindfulness and ‘live in the moment’ in every day life- even for very short periods of time?

What’s all this about Mindfulness?
The concept of Mindfulness is becoming more and more popular and we hear this word used just about everywhere now. Apparently mindfulness is good for our physical and mental well being and for all sorts of people and conditions: stress, anxiety, depression and addictions to name just a few. But what is it?
I recently taught yoga to a small group of adults at a project run by Mind and somebody there told me how useful he had found mindfulness techniques for coping with daily life. He recommended Jon Kabat-Zinn, an American scientist and clinician, who has written lots of books and developed CDs on the subject.

Looking after your Back
I have been reading a very interesting article in the Saturday edition of the Times (Weekend Body+ Soul October 11th) about back problems and how to deal with them and ‘beat the pain’.
The article states that almost 80% of us suffer from back pain at some point in our lives and back troubles definitely seem to be on the increase. It seems to be because of the life style we are leading.
